Location: Newhaven Harbour, Newhaven, East Sussex.
Job Type and start date: Full-Time, Permanent.
Salary: £66,000 to £71,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
About Us: Newhaven Port & Properties Ltd is the Statutory and Competent Harbour Authority for the Port of Newhaven in East Sussex, with the legislative duties of safeguarding the Harbour fit for use as a commercial, fishing and leisure port. The Port is also an important cross channel ferry port linking Sussex with the Port of Dieppe in France.
Job Description: We are seeking a highly motivated, active and proficient person to fulfil the role of Safety, Health, Environment & Operations Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all health & safety and environment protocols within the port across maintenance, operational and construction activities, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and industry standards and assisting in working towards decarbonisation/net zero. The successful candidate will be expected to work well in a multi-functional team and will be required to carry out other duties associated with a busy working port, including acting as the Duty Officer; being a member of the port emergency response team; operation of the swingbridge; border control inspections; and assisting with day-to-day management of Port operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and maintain safety, health and environment policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and audits and chair H&S committee meetings.
- Make monthly written reports for the Board of Directors.
- Regularly review and ensure compliance with safety management systems.
- Provide training and awareness programs to employees regarding health, safety and environmental protocols.
- Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses; and implement corrective actions.
- Liaise with regulatory and industry bodies and ensure all statutory provisions are met.
- Liaise with employees, subcontractors and suppliers on Health & Safety matters.
- Review the production of third-party risk assessments/method statements, approve Permits to Work and advise on health and safety matters.
- Promote a strong culture of safety and wellbeing throughout the port, monitor and report.
- Be a proactive member of the management team.
- Assist the team in working towards net-zero/decarbonisation.
- Act as fire warden, carry out fire risk assessments, advise on fire safety etc.
- Oversee training and qualification of all staff ensuring that records are kept updated.
- Assisting with the day-to-day management of Port operations.

Minimum required:
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Health & Safety or equivalent qualification
- Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and best practices
- Working knowledge of CDM Regulations
- Excellent communication, leadership and IT skills
- Physically fit and active with an attitude for hands on leadership.
- Full Driving Licence
- Right to work in the UK
Advantageous:

- Experience in the construction industry, facilities management, project management or in the ports sector
