All vessels of 49m and over, all vessels under tow and all vessels carrying dangerous goods, are subject to compulsory pilotage. A minimum of 12 hours notice is required for a pilot. All vessels must use the services of a local shipping agent to facilitate the efficient exchange of information required, arrange for services and to be available in case of any problems/incidents. Users should also familiarise themselves with the Port Details page on this website.

All vessels must report to Newhaven Radio on VHF Channel 12 at least 1 hour before arrival at the Pilot station, which is situated 1 to 1.5 n.mile SW of the Western Breakwater Lighthouse. Anchorage is 1 to 1.5 n.miles SW of western Breakwater Lighthouse.
