NOTICE TO ANGLERS/FISHERFOLK IN NEWHAVEN HARBOUR
Fishing/Angling in the harbour is prohibited under the Harbour byelaws. The activity has been tolerated whilst it does not impact on other legitimate Port users.
Sadly, some fishermen/anglers are abusing the tolerance by interfering with the safe passage of boats and the safety of persons in those boats.
The casting towards or deliberately at passing boats or the failure to clear lines from the channel to allow safe passage of boats is causing a nuisance and is very dangerous.
Persons are now getting injured and if this intolerable behaviour does not stop, somebody is going to get seriously injured or worse.
Boats have priority within the Harbour at all times.
If this behaviour continues, then there will be no choice but to enforce the Byelaws and ban all fishing/angling in the Harbour.
Those found to be contravening the byelaw will face prosecution, a fine and a criminal record.
Respect other Harbour users - Behave or be banned and prosecuted - your choice.
This area is covered by CCTV and the Police have given assurance that they take this matter seriously and will attend, identify persons, and take such action is required under the Public Order or Criminal Justice Acts.
